Digital Community of Cambodia - DCC 2.2

In this project case study, I was working on a new phase called DCC Phase 2.2 for mobile app design, which mainly focuses on Group Feature.

The goal was to create a group feature that enabled users to engage in the activities as a community, which may involve posting, sharing, and manging groups.

My role is mainly focus on visual designing.

🛠️ Exploring the problem

Before moving to the process of the product design, we should explore the problem that lead to the design of the app. After finishing phase 2.1, in the DCC Phase 2.2 project, the mobile app lacked a dedicated feature to support community engagement within its digital community platform that can be customized based on the specific information technology topics.

Both new and existing users needed a way to connect, interact, and collaborate through group-based activities such as posting, sharing content, and managing group memberships.

The absence of this functionality limited the app’s ability to foster meaningful user interaction and collective participation.

🧑‍💻 Target Users

The primary users are individuals who are part of a digital community and seek to connect with like-minded people through shared interests or goals. These users are likely to engage in group discussions, share content, and participate in community-driven activities. The team has conducted user research, and below are our ideal target users:

  • Community members looking to join or create groups around shared topics.

  • Content contributors who want to post and share updates within specific groups.

  • Group admins or moderators responsible for managing group content and members.

  • New users seeking a sense of belonging or engagement through active communities.

🧭 Project scope

The DCC Phase 2.2 project focuses on designing and implementing a Group Feature within the mobile app to support community-based engagement. The scope includes functionality for three distinct user roles—Group Admins, Moderators, and Members—with the following capabilities:

  1. Group Admin (Group Creator):

    • Create and customize groups

    • Manage group settings and visibility

    • Approve or remove members

    • Assign or remove moderators

    • Post announcements or content on behalf of the group

  1. Moderator:

    • Support the admin in managing group content

    • Monitor member activity and moderate discussions

    • Approve or delete posts or comments

    • Help enforce community guidelines within the group

  1. Member:

    • Join and participate in groups

    • Post content, comment, and react within the group

    • Share media or resources with group members

    • View group updates and engage in discussions

The project aims to create an intuitive and scalable design that fosters interaction, promotes collaboration, and strengthens the sense of community within the app.

🎨🖥️ Design Process:

Research & Discovery

Understand user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.

Information Architecture

Organize content and structure navigation logically. The business analyst is responsible in the development of the information architecture & user flow. With user flow in hand, we move on to the visual design part. We skipped the wireframing part for 2 main reasons: time restriction and as we have UI Kits as well as Style Guide attached to us from the previous phase, we believed skipping wireframes would benefit us more.

Design Inspiration & References

Visual Design

Develop the look and feel, ensuring usability and aesthetics. This phase takes quite a long time, as there are 3 roles that are required to be designed. To sum up, there are more than 100 screens associated with this project.

Style Guide

This is the 2.2 version of the app; therefore, there are existing style guides within the project.

Adapting to the existing style guide and keeping the UI consistency between each screens are important and required time.

Testing & Validation

Ensure usability before development.

The whole team gathered for a meeting to discuss the usability of the UI before the handoff to the development team.

The group screen:

We have come up with two screens to make sure that our stakeholders have more options to look at and grasp the idea behind each screen. During the meeting, we discussed the overall looks and feels of each screen, and the team decided to go to with the second option.

Majority of the Stakeholder:

“We chose Option 2 because it offers a better user experience with minimal friction. It makes the process feel smooth and professional, which aligns better with the overall quality of the app."

Business Analyst:

"By adding the Members Tab to the screen, user can see and interact with other user, and learn about each member through their roles and their activeness within the group, …etc.

Handoff to Development

Once the design phase is complete, the next critical step is handing off the designs to the development team. As a UX/UI Designer, my responsibility doesn't end at delivering high-fidelity mockups. Instead, I stay actively involved to ensure a smooth transition from design to implementation.

The goal is to keep the product team aligned, reduce misinterpretations, and make sure the final product looks and functions as intended.

Outcome

Users can enjoy engaging with other end-users on a specific topic and can also be an owner of a specific group by creating one. For a specific quantitative data, at the momment is not available.
